Dr Wiebe obtained his MD degree at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and specialized in Internal Medicine at the National University of Mexico. He trained in Neurology, Epilepsy and Electrophysiology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, followed by a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University, Canada. He served as Director of the Epilepsy Programme at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, where he also founded the Evidence-Based Neurology Programme. He then became Head of Neurology and Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is currently Director of the Calgary Comprehensive Epilepsy Programme, Professor of Clinical Neurosciences, and Chair of the Clinical Research Unit at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In the International League Against Epilepsy he has served as President of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy, as Chair of the North American Commission of the ILAE, as Secretary General of ILAE from 2009 to 2013, as Treasurer of the ILAE from 2013 to 2017 and as President of ILAE from 2017 to 2021. Professor Wiebe’s academic and research interests include: epilepsy and epilepsy surgery, health services research, health informatics, health outcomes research, and evidence based medicine. He has published over 300 peer reviewed articles and has given over 250 International Lectures. Dr Wiebe has mentored numerous national and international clinicians and researchers who have become successful leaders and academicians in their own right.
